Mornings have always been a sacred thing to me. A quote by John Muir says, 'One can make a day of any size.' How you wake up sets the tone for a successful day. Starting the day early allows you to spend time on what will fuel you for whatever is on your daily schedule. I like to start most mornings with a bit of organization, reading, coffee, exercise, breakfast. For those of you who absolutely despise waking up, don't throw the towel in yet. You don't need to set your alarm for two hours earlier to start a morning routine. Think about your goals, and what you could implement into the beginning of your day to help you reach them. Not every day will be the same, but having a routine will give you a rhythm to wake up to.
TIP NO. 1 - TIDY UP + MAKE YOUR BED
We all feel better in a space that is well kept and clean. Order around us brings order to our overstimulated brains. Starting your day by making the bed and tidying up your room or washing the dishes is a great way to wake your body up and feel accomplished early on. The first thing I do when stepping out of bed is pull up the duvet and arrange our pillows. I know you'll mess it all up again in the evening, but I promise once you make a habit out of making your bed, you'll appreciate walking into a tidy bedroom at the end of a long day.
TIP NO. 2 - QUIET YOUR MIND
Turn on some soft music and take a few minutes to read or pray. To be honest, this step is the hardest for me. It would be easier to just start 'doing', but quieting the soul is so beneficial for your wellbeing and spiritual health. Reflecting on God's truth, reading an inspiring book, talking to Jesus, or doodling in a journal are ways I like to spend this quiet time. It only takes five minutes to set your mind for the day and I always notice a difference in my thoughts when I do!
TIP NO. 3 - EAT BREAKFAST
Running out the door without breakfast, is like going on a road trip with your fuel tank on 'E'. Giving your body nutrition will help you think clearer, energize your cells, and start your metabolism. Try prepping your breakfast the night before to make mornings run more smoothly. My favorite quick breakfasts include a smoothie bowl, homemade energy bars, overnight oatmeal, or avocado toast.
TIP NO. 4 - HAVE SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO...Nobody said this was a fairytale; the truth is, sometimes waking up is hard. Hitting the snooze button will happen from time to time, but motivating yourself with a reward outside of your warm sheets will make getting up a little easier. For me that treat is coffee. I look forward to it every morning and knowing I get to make a steamy cup, brewed just the way I like it, gives me that extra push to crawl out of a cozy bed.
TIP NO. 5 - GET YOUR BODY MOVING
More days than not, I engage in some sort of exercise before heading off to work. Whether it be a neighborhood stroll, 30 minute HIIT workout, or a yoga flow, getting active early on will begin your day with healthy intentions. If adding exercise to your morning feels like a foreign concept, try just completing a short sequence of stretches when you wake up and see how your body feels!
