This is the New Year - VRSLY Devotional - 01.01.17

There is a song that I have been listening to for years, titled “New Year”, by Death Cab For Cutie. In the opening line Ben Gibbard sings, “This is the new year, and I don’t feel any different.” I have always connected with this line. Nothing magical happens between 11:59pm on December 31st, and 12:00am on January 1st. It’s simply just a date change. I am, however, someone who loves making goals for the new year and I have quite a few for 2017. Some of them are pretty grand — like increasing our business sales by more than 25%, and some of them are simple — like not looking at my phone as much. What I love about the new year as that it gives me the chance to do something different. I might not feel different from one night to the next morning, but I can do something different, or challenge myself to be better at any number of things. We so often live our lives in the daily, mundane, cycle of life that every day seems like the last, and even on a day when we literally slip from one year into the next, we find ourselves saying, “This is the new year, and I don’t feel any different.” But, it doesn’t have to be that way. I can decide that this will be the year that I breathe deeper, love better and pursue the things that set my heart ablaze with passion and excitement. Don’t write your new year off, already claiming it as the same as the last, and the one before that.  Instead, push past the indifference and live bolder and more alive than any year previous. That way, at the end of 2017, you can proudly proclaim, “This is the new year, and I feel completely different… in the best way possible.”  Devotion by @tjmousetis // Artwork by @tjmousetis #vrsly #madewithvrsly #vrslydevotional
