Great Joy - VRSLY Devotional - 01.04.17

In the book of James, he writes, "when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy." (James 1:2 NLT)

I love that this translation uses the word opportunity. That word is almost always associated with something positive. We hear sports stars saying they were grateful for the opportunity to play or perform at this level. We hear our friends talk about a great job opportunity they have.

Yet, when we face trials or hardships we usually use it as an "opportunity" to complain to anyone who will listen. We are usually very good at it. I know that I am.

Currently, I am training to be on American Ninja Warrior. If they say yes to my audition video I will have the opportunity to compete in front of millions. I want to be ready for that opportunity so I've started training by running, lifting and doing some rock climbing. I am new to rock climbing so my hands have taken a beating. I have ripped off pieces of skin, which is very gross and painful. I know the training will all be worth it if I get the opportunity to perform. I will be thankful for the pain as I run and hang on the course. In the same way I want to train myself to react to anything with joy. I want to be ready for the opportunity to consider any kind of trouble an opportunity for great joy.

That reaction isn't my natural instinct though. I usually want to complain, so I must train to consider all things joy. I will train by asking people to call me out, and setting up daily reminders to choose joy. Just like my grip and skin is getting stronger, I know my ability to choose joy will get stronger.

The odds are pretty slim to make in on ANW, but if I do, the training will be worth it. The odds for harship in my life is at 100% guaranteed so I know that training will see it's opportunity to shine. Training to see troubles of any kind as an opportunity for great joy will always be worth it. I suggest you join in on that training.

My Prayer for Today - Lord, help me use every opportunity for great joy so that I may glorify Your name in all situations.
